Asus Zenbook UX31E-DH52

If you are in the market for a gorgeous 13-inch laptop, look no further as this Asus Zenbook UX31E-DH52 is the model to choose. It has a sleek design, great speakers, along with a high resolution display and a pretty decent battery life. It costs a little over $1,000 which means that it is about $200 cheaper than a MacBook Air which makes it a pretty interesting alternative not only to Apple’s popular model, but also to the Samsung Series 9.

For the money you’ll be paying for this you will get a second generation Intel Core i5-2557M processor clocked at 1.70 GHz and 4GB of DDR3 memory rated at 1,333 MHz. For storage it features a rather small, yet fast 128GB SSD while the chipset is an Intel QS67. In the graphics department it comes with an integrated Intel HD 3000 while the operating system is the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Home Premium.

The Asus Zenbook UX31E-DH52 measures 12.8 x 8.8 x 0.1-0.7 inches and weighs 3.1 pounds (0.4 pounds more with the AC adapter). It is made from unibody aluminum (just like the MacBook Air) and comes with a darker gloss on the back lid and radial metal lines on the back which catch light, giving this 13-inch laptop an industrial-design flavor. Inside you’ll find brushed metal surfaces, a rear speaker grill and four black rubber feet.

Probably the major drawback of this model would have to be its keyboard which features flat, square keys that have been raised. These are a little bit too mushy and shallow, and the problem is that you will probably mistype for several times. Another drawback would have to be that the keyboard is not backlit while the black-on-silver key lettering is a little bit difficult to read at off angles. Instead of using a Synaptics touchpad, Asus has decided to go with Sentelic which even though offers just about the same multitouch gestures; it doesn’t seem to be as responsive as a Synaptics unit.

It has a 13.3-inch glossy display that has been framed in a bezel which is not edge-to-edge. This display has a native resolution of 1,600 x 900 pixels which means that you will be able to fit more text, documents and web pages on the screen. The display itself manages to be quite bright, with good color reproduction and decent viewing angles.

We should mention that Asus fitted this model with Bang & Olufsen speakers which are definitely better than what you’ll find on most laptops. Its integrated battery will last for almost 5 hours during a video playback test, which is better than the Acer Aspire S3, but worse than the Lenovo IdeaPad U300.
