T-Mobile Smartphone – LG Doubleplay

Back in 2011 T-Mobile introduced the LG Doubleplay in its lineup of smartphones which is an interesting handset thanks to its dual screen setup. The handset measures 4.8 x 2.5 x 0.63 inches so we’re dealing with a pretty big and heavy device which weights an impressive 6.7 ounces. We like that it has rounded corners and gentle curves, while the smooth matte finish located along the bezel gives the smartphone a more sophisticated look.

The front of the Doubleplay is occupied by a 3.5-inch TFT display that has a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels (HVGA) which manages to be colorful and crisp. The capacitive touchscreen seems to be quite responsive most of the times thanks to the use of a powerful Qualcomm Scorpion processor running at 1.0 GHz. Beneath this screen you’ll notice the usual Android keys for Menu, Home, Back and Search.

Sliding the handset will come with a surprise because instead of a traditional QWERTY keyboard, you get a split in half keyboard which makes room for a 2-inch QVGA subdisplay located right in the middle. On this small display you can accommodate up to eight customizable shortcuts. What’s the point of having two displays? Well, it gives you the possibility to multitask and perform two different functions at the same time. You also are able to “send” applications between these two displays.

Sitting on the left spine of the LG Doubleplay is a microUSB port, while on the right side is the volume rocker. On top of the smartphone are the power/screen lock button and the 3.5mm headphone jack. The camera lens is set inside the brushed metal strip located on the back and it comes with an LED flash for taking photos in a dark environment.

The smartphone is running on Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread and packs the Swype keyboard along with the default one that Android provides. It comes with the usual Google services like Talk, Gmail, Search with Voice, Latitude, Places, Maps with Navigation and YouTube. Also on board of the LG Doubleplay you’ll find a voice dialer, calculator, calendar and a bunch of preinstalled applications like Blio e-reader, 411 & More, DriveSmart, Bejeweled 2, Cloud Text, GroupText, Lookout, T-Mobile Name ID, Slacker radio, SimCity Deluxe, Richnote, Polaris Office, Facebook, Zinio and Twitter.

Let’s not forget about the connectivity features such as Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11n Wi-Fi and GPS. The five megapixel camera takes some pretty good photos and it comes with a bunch of editing tools. It can also record 720p HD videos which have a decent quality, but seem shaky some of the times.

The battery should last you about 11 days in standby or up to three hours of talk time.

One pretty nice phone. But the battery is not keeping up with it’s features.
